In the previous blog post, Cholesterol and Your Heart: A Deep Dive Beyond the Basics, we discussed the role cholesterol plays in our body and how it may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis (a condition where the arteries in your body become hardened and narrowed) and heart disease.
It is important that you know the results of your lipid blood test panel. To prepare for a lipid blood test, follow these guidelines:
Fasting: In most cases, you should fast for 8-12 hours before the test. This means not eating or drinking anything except water. If you have diabetes, discuss the fasting requirement with your doctor. Depending on what kind of diabetes medicines you take, fasting may pose risk of developing abnormally low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Some newer guidelines suggest that fasting may not be necessary for routine lipid testing. However, if you have a history of very high triglyceride levels (triglycerides above 400 mg/dL), fasting before the test becomes more important. Please always follow your healthcare provider's specific instructions when preparing for your lipid panel blood test.
Timing: If you were recommended to fast before your blood test, schedule your test for the morning, as this makes it easier to fast overnight.
Stable diet: Maintain a stable diet for 2-3 weeks before the test, if possible.
Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you're taking, as some may interfere with the results.
Alcohol: Avoid alcohol before the test, as it can affect the results.
Remember, the most crucial step is to follow your healthcare provider's specific instructions, as they may vary based on your individual health situation and the purpose of the test.
To help you understand the standard lipid panel blood test results, I have recorded a short, informative video that I hope you will find helpful.
